  • Describe the Project, its location and its objectives: The Russell County Rotary Club will partner with a local food bank in Russell County to provide meals for over 2000 individuals impacting over 400 families. In FY21-22, the Russell County Rotary supported local food banks financially and via donations. Through this district grant project, we would like to continue supporting this program into FY 22-23.

  • Describe how the project will benefit the community and/or improve the lives of the less fortunate: Hunger is a local and national problem but particularly for rural, impoverished communities like Russell County. Feeding America Southwest Virginia compiles data for food insecurity in our region, which includes Russell County:
    Population: 28,245
    Food Insecurity Rate: 13%
    Food Insecure Individuals: 3,530
    This project would help to alleviate hunger and food insecurity in our own community and build capacity within our food pantries to meet the needs of those who struggle with hunger.
    In 2021 Elk Garden School Community Ministry Served 258 families and 2039 individuals. So far this year they have served 447 families and 1078 individuals

  • Describe the Rotarian hands-on activities in the project (i.e. non-financial participation): Russell County Rotarians will assist in providing meals to the Elk Garden School Community Ministry food bank as well as help with the distribution of food. The food bank distributes food on Tuesday each week.
  • Describe the publicity plan to inform the general public that this is a Rotary sponsored project: Once a date is selected. We will utilize Russell County Rotary’s Facebook page to post pictures and release an article in the local newspaper. Russell County Rotary will also distribute information using email lists and partner organization meetings.
