  • Describe the Project, its location and its objectives: Last year the Rotary Club of Roanoke Valley and three other clubs provided a food packaging program to support two elementary schools and a community food pantry. Ultimately we were able to collect a budget that allowed us to assemble 30,000 meals with 150 people working for two hours.

    This year, The Rotary Club of Roanoke Valley, with four other Area 8 clubs, will support the same three community feeding programs in Roanoke, Virginia. Currently, these programs provide food to children living in poverty for the weekends and holidays, when they are unable to receive food provided by the school system (backpack program), and will allow a community food pantry added capacity to offer additional meals and food resources to those who need it. Through the provision of meal packages, each designed to feed a family six meal portions, this project will allow the community feeding programs to serve additional families and maintain a stock of food for times of need. Our event will generate almost 6500 packages of food for our three supported programs. The packaging allows it to be stored for up to two years, but our numbers indicate that the supply won’t last through one school year.

    The Outreach Program will be utilized for the provision of bulk materials provided to these feeding programs. The Outreach Program is an organization that provides food staples in bulk for events to package the staples and protein supplements into bags that provide six meal portions per bag, along with preparation instructions and nutritional information. The nutritional values have been evaluated by a nutritionist and confirms the food value of this community effort.

    The grant will require the participation of the 5 Rotary clubs and the three supported organizations to assemble meal package. Our local Rotoract and Interact clubs will also be involved. The event will occur in a local facility, currently unschedulable due Covid, to provide food options for the school year.

  • Describe how the project will benefit the community and/or improve the lives of the less fortunate: All three of the organizations are providing a real service to our community, in addition to the support that they provide to the direct, individual/family support. The backpack programs provide food for each student to take home Friday afternoon to supplement nutrition for the weekend The two organizations we are supporting plan to provide food for over 400 students each weekend during the school year. The community food pantry provides food to help families during difficult times during the year. They supported over 2500 family visits to the pantry last year. All three entities are non-profits, which must secure funding internally and through fundraising. All work to provide nutritious meals to children and their families who live in poverty.

    • Confirm the date/location of the event
    • Plan the setup for the location
    • Recruit and coordinate the volunteers

    During the event, club members will:
    • Set up the facility for the event
    • Assemble 6500 meal packages
    • Participate in clean-up when the event is over
    • Help deliver packaged meals to the three organizations
  • Describe the publicity plan to inform the general public that this is a Rotary sponsored project: Press will be invited to attend the event. Our Facebook page will describe the upcoming event and will feature pictures afterward. We will have our club banner and other signage at the event. Information and photos will be disseminated to the Rotary Informer and district website.
