- Rotary Year: 2022-2023
- Application Date: 6/30/2022
- Club Name: Hillsville
- Project Name: Hillsville VFW
- Project Total Expenditures: $9,000.00
- Grant Amount Requested: $4,000.00
- Describe the Project, its location and its objectives: Grover King VFW Post 1115 was chartered May 15, 1935. It currently sits about one city block from Main Street in Hillsville and is a major focal point for the town.
This VFW has always been a staple in the community of Hillsville and surrounding areas. It serves all of Carroll County as well as much of Grayson, Wythe, and Floyd Counties. The facility hosts community meals, large meetings, craft shows, benefits, fundraisers, flea-markets, soon to be non-denominational worship services, music shows, and many other community functions.
Besides the annual Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend Flea Markets – attended by well over 100 thousand visitors and locals – some examples are a Domestic Violence Awareness seminar, concerts, 4th of July fireworks display, and car shows. These events are fundraisers for the VFW benefiting the veterans and family members, and the facilities enhance the community by providing a venue for large events.
The project is focused on improving Hillsville VFW facilities by providing the following Kitchen equipment - commercial ice machine (used – pricing TBD) - kitchen cabinet modification needed to install this ice machine - refrigerator (used – pricing TBD) - griddle(s) (used – pricing TBD) - other kitchen items as needed and per project budget New chairs and chair rack (dolly)
The chairs used for VFW functions were purchased ‘used’ many years ago. Due to the repeated stacking/unstacking and sanitizing, they are in very poor condition and in need of replacement.
- This is the Club’s: Primary Project Application
- Expected Start Date: 7/15/2022
- Expected End Date: 10/28/2022
- Expected Number of Beneficiaries: 5000
- Describe how the project will benefit the community and/or improve the lives of the less fortunate: Ice is in great demand at many events. Having a commercial ice machine will address shortages and reduce the effort to bring ice in from outside sources.
A refrigerator providing additional refrigeration capabilities, and updated kitchen equipment, will increase efficiency in meal preparations for events, and reduce costs by providing more space for chilled items and perishable item storage.
New chairs and a chair rack (dolly) would ensure seating is available and comfortable for event participants.
- Estimated Total Project Volunteer Hours: 40
- Describe the Rotarian hands-on activities in the project (i.e. non-financial participation): 40 hrs planning, purchasing, delivering (as needed), receiving (as needed), installation help (as needed)
