  • Brief Description:
The Rotary Club of Blacksburg Awards 2 Vocational Service awards to Non-Rotarian members of our community that we feel best exhibit the 4-Way Test through their every day lives.
    1) Our Citizen of the Year Award began over 25 years ago to recognize an outstanding individual as the Blacksburg Rotary Club Citizen of the Year. This award was established to recognize non-Rotarian persons of varied careers and vocations for their ethical business behavior. Selection for this award is based primarily on the nominee's ethical business behavior and service to the community, and nominees who represent the various careers and vocations throughout our community. A $500 contribution to the award winners choice of charity organization is made in their honor from the Blacksburg Rotary Club.
    2) First Responder of the Year Award began in 2017 as our club wanted to recognize those members of the community that are first to arrive on the scene of an emergency in addition to our Citizen of the Year. Nominees must be a non-Rotarian, member, paid or volunteer, of a Montgomery County fire, Law enforcement or rescue department. Selection for the award is based on the nominee's ethical behavior and service to the community and that they exhibt the Rotary Four Way Test. A $500 financial contribution is donated in the recipients honor to the department they are a member of.
    3) Member Spotlight in our Weekly Club Bulletin - Each week one of our club members is spotlighted to share some of their personal and professional background so that we, as a membership can learn more about our fellow members and a little about what our members do for fun as well as for profession.
    4) Club Directory - Each year, our club publishes a club directory complete with color photos, names, places of work, Club classification, spouse information and contact information, both personal as well as business.
  • Participation of Club Members:
    1) Citizen of the Year Award - 14% of our membership participates in the selection of the award winner from the nominations received. 100% of the club members participate in our various Local Foundation Fundraisers as well as financial donations which allow the contribution portion of the award to be possible.
    2) First Responder of the Year Award - 14% of our membership participates in the selection of the award winner from the nominations received. 100% of the club members participate in our various Local Foundation Fundraisers as well as financial donations which allow the contribution portion of the award to be possible.
    3) Member Spot light - If you count the recipients of the club bulletin, we have 100% of membership with the opportunity to read each week's bulletin. We produce about 45-50 bulletins a year which allows about 45-50% of our membership to be spotlighted in a 12 month period.
    4) Club Directory - 100 % of our club members are part of the club directory and receive at least one copy when the new directory is published
  • Resulting Benefits:
    1) Citizen of the Year Award - This award shines a light on members of our community who serve without the goal of recognition, but because they feel led to do so and they operate using the 4 Way Test outside of being a Rotarian. The financial contribution of the award allows our club to honor that recipient while also helping other community minded organizations in our local community. This in turn also provides another opportunity for more of our community to hear about Rotary and the good that we can do together. We have had past Citizens of the Year become members of our Club after the award was presented, which is an extra bonus!
    2) First Responder of the Year - This award allows our club to recognize the members of our community who serve beyond the call of citizenship. These folks work tirelessly to be there for our community members and we have this opportunity to recognize those people as well as contribute to the department they serve in.
    3) Member Spotlight - The resulting Benefit is the opportunity to get to know the other members in our club. A Club of 99 members is sometimes hard to get to know each other. The member Spotlight allows us to each learn some thing new about our fellow members. You never know who has the same hobbies, started off in a different profession or went to high school in your home town! This is definitely an opportunity for us to grow closer in membership.
    4) Club Directory - Our Club Directory benefits our club members to have each club member information, professional and contact info at their fingertips to have the opportunity to call for additional information, vocational questions, or club information.
