• Rotary Year: 2020-2021
  • Application Date: 7/29/2020
  • Club Name (Primary): Danville-Riverview
  • Club Name 2: Danville-After Hours
  • Club Name 3: Danville
  • Project Name: Rotary Park at Dan Daniel
  • Project Total Cost: $10,600.00
  • Grant Amount Requested: $4,000.00
  • Describe the Project, its location and its objectives: The 2020 Danville Rotary Collaborative Club project will install an inviting Rotary Park on Danville’s Riverwalk trail, a 13-mile paved trail along the Dan River where everyone is inviting to play, exercise, rest, and enjoy the area’s natural beauty. https://www.danvilleva.gov/2035/Danville-Riverwalk-Trail All of these amenities are available at no cost to the visitor creating equal access for all including those with intellectual and physical disabilities and those who are financially challenged or oppressed. The Rotary Park will transition this open space to a destination for all those who visit.

The Riverwalk trail sees thousands of visitors from throughout the region per year. It links many community assets such as the American Legions Stadium (home of the Atlanta Braves farm team), baseball fields, softball fields, a skate park, a handicapped accessible playground, and a challenge course and soccer/football fields. The Riverwalk trail runs through the River District, which is Danville’s downtown business district and includes Dan Daniel Memorial Park, Anglers Park the Institute for Advanced learning, and the Danville Regional Airport, which are all accessible by the Riverwalk trail.

Along the Riverwalk trail is the Dan Daniel water stop. This water stop is the only water stop between Anglers Park and The Crossing at the Dan trail head, located approximately 1.5 miles away. Therefore, it is an extremely popular place for the trail walkers and bike riders to spend some time recuperating from a long walk or ride and preparing for the next leg of the journey. It is also easily accessible by those who are visiting the handicapped playground and ballfields.

Based on the outcome of planning discussions with the City of Danville Parks and Recreation Department, it is at this location where the three Rotary Clubs in Danville will install Rotary Park. Rotary Park will complement the Rotary Clubs’ continued investment in the Riverwalk trail and add a feature that encourages rest and conversation.

The 2020-2021 Rotary Park service project will feature five elements:
    • The 100 foot concrete wall will become a graphic-designed, colorful, playfully painted wall which will provide a backdrop to a seating area and the water fountains.

    • High-quality, metal benches, featuring the Rotary logo will be installed and offer a visual reminder that Rotary is at work within this community.

    • The Rotary logo will be part of the wall design or the shade structure and may also become part of the worldwide waymarking trail, “a way to mark unique locations on the planet and give them a voice” (https://www.waymarking.com/).

    • A bicycle repair station will be installed in the grass area located in front of the wall.

    • Landscaping will be installed with flowers and shrubs planted at both ends of the concrete wall in an existing mulched area.

    • Shade structures and/or trees will be installed in the area above the wall, allowing the area to be well-shaded for visitors.
  • Expected Start Date: 10/1/2020
  • Expected End Date: 4/30/2021
  • Expected Number of Beneficiaries: 20000
  • Describe how the project will benefit the community and/or improve the lives of the less fortunate: Danville Riverview Rotary, Danville Rotary, and Danville After Hours Rotary Clubs intentionally work to improve the lives of those less fortunate who live and play within our community. These Clubs continuously contribute to this community through scholarship programs, investment in recreational and educational programs, support of the local food bank with hand-on efforts and financial contributions, monthly volunteering with community service organizations, and on-going financial contributions to multiple charity organizations. With every service project, the three Rotary Clubs are intentionally working to benefit the entire community and improve the lives of those who need additional resources.

This year Rotary has the opportunity to invest in one of the region’s most utilized assets, the Riverwalk trail. The future of Danville’s Riverwalk trail is to make connections into the community to provide an alternative to vehicular transportation. The Riverwalk Trail has been referred to as a transformational asset that has changed the health and wellness of the community. This trail was also a driving factor when Danville was selected as a “Gateway City” to the future Beaches to Bluegrass trail that will link VA Beach to Galax.

However, the Dan Daniel water stop located on the Riverwalk is not inviting to Riverwalk visitors and desperately needs a makeover. The City of Danville has expressed a desire to renovate this area but has not had funds to carry out this project.

The Rotary Park service project incorporates the City’s vision, enhances the existing water stop located within the beautiful Riverwalk trail, installs a new bike repair station, and adds a visual presence of Rotary within the City of Danville. The ungraded water stop will now become a destination offering all visitors a place to rest, an appealing shaded area to have a conversation, and a reminder of Rotary’s commitment to service.
  • Expected Total Project Volunteer Hours: 500
  • Describe the Rotarian hands-on activities in the project (i.e. non-financial participation): Rotarians will work in partnership with the City of Danville to guide the design process for the concrete wall and the implementation of the service project. Members will prime the wall, transfer the design to the wall, and paint the design as defined by the graphic plan. In addition, the skill of Rotary members will be required to install the Rotary benches; plant flowers, shrubs, and trees; install a shade structure; and install the bicycle repair station on the concrete pad that will be constructed by the City of Danville.
  • Describe the publicity plan to inform the general public that this is a Rotary sponsored project: All social media tools will be used, and news articles will be placed in the local newspapers and on radio stations. Rotary will also partner with the City of Danville to video and publicize the journey members took to develop the Rotary Park. A dedication ceremony will be held to dedicate the Rotary Park. This ceremony will be televised on River City TV https://www.danville-va.gov/333/River-City-TV , the Danville local station providing access to all residents who subscribe to the local cable service
