- Describe the Project, its location and its objectives: To provide scholarships for after school and summer camp programs for children ages 6-18 to The Kids Clubs of Northern Shenandoah Valley located at 2400 Roosevelt Boulevard, Winchester , VA. The program is open to all students in the Winchester and Frederick County area but provides the basic needs for many children living in households below poverty level. Objectives include to provide a safe learning environment during the summer and after school predominately for latch key children. About 73% of the children served are living below the poverty level. More than 80% of the children in the program are in a single parent household or being raised by a relative. We need to help boost these children to be able to work and succeed in our community. This small investment in our youth now will reap large rewards in the future.

- Expected Start Date: 7/1/2017
- Expected End Date: 5/1/2018
- Expected Number of Beneficiaries: 140
- Describe how the project will benefit the community and/or improve the lives of the less fortunate: In the last year, the Kids Club of Winchester has lost their government provided location and financial support. Their programs assist many children below the poverty level in our community after school and during the summer. The Frederick County Rotary Club is passionate about supporting their programs that lift up children to reaching their full potential. Our club will help with providing scholarships to the children that need assistance to participate in the structured programs that provide assistance with homework, promote healthy living and develop good character and leadership skills. The Kids Club wants to provide programs for all children even if they cannot afford the small amount they charge for camp or after school activities. The funds from this grant will keep children in a safe and supervised activity until their caretakers are off work. Many single parent households have huge struggles between working a job to support their family and the hours their children are in school. This grant will help fill that gap in our community.
- Estimated Total Project Volunteer Hours: 240
- Describe the Rotarian hands-on activities in the project (i.e. non-financial participation): Several Rotarians along with Interact members will assist leading classes, provide tutoring, and planting container gardens. In addition, Rotarians will provide training to children on bicycle safety including bicycle rides to promote healthy living and exercise.
- Describe the publicity plan to inform the general public that this is a Rotary sponsored project: Publicity of the scholarships will include press releases via newspaper, Face Book Page, Web Page, and Radio. The Rotary cogwheel will be on event signs. Also, Rotarians will wear their Rotary t-shirts while volunteering.
