- Describe how the project will benefit the community and/or improve the lives of the less fortunate:
The Winchester Rescue Mission serves many in our community. On a daily basis they pick up food and distribute it to local non-profit organizations and provide bible study, addiction recovery services, housing, meals, spiritual counseling and case management to assist both Winchester Mission Residents and non-Residents in identifying their cause of homelessness and tailoring individually adapted recovery plans that suit their unique situations.
In 2016, an average of 60 hot meals per night were served to both Winchester Rescue Mission residents and non-residents. The Mission also provided shower and laundry services to 350 non-residents and nights of shelter services were provided to over 150 different needy individuals throughout the year. In addition the Winchester Rescue Mission distributes food to several non-profit organizations in Winchester and an average of 25 non-Residents from Monday through Friday. This food distribution service accounted for more than 1200 pounds of food distributed to needy organizations, individuals and families each week; this is food that would otherwise be thrown away. Currently, 6 Mission Residents and non-Residents are receiving Literacy and basic Computer training and General Equivalency Diploma (GED) preparation training.
Since 1973 the Winchester Rescue Mission exists to inspire and facilitate the recovery of the whole person, body, soul and spirit and is currently working to expand their mission to include women and children. Rotary has been and wants to continue to play a role in this endeavor.
