- Describe the Project, its location and its objectives: This project will continue our Jamaican Dental/Eye Global Grant which included a VTT. Project would enhance the dental clinic in Frome, Jamaica by providing mobile dental equipment and supplies. Portable equipment will allow dental care to be provided in schools and other settings. The equipment also will serve as back up for the clinic when not being used in a mobile setting. Equipment and supplies would be available for dental hygiene students from Lord Fairfax Community College providing services while on mission trips to Jamaica. The supplies included are basic items used for every patient, including towels, gauze, prophy items, autoclave bags and disinfecting wipes. ``
- This is the Club’s: Primary Project Application
- Expected Start Date: 9/1/2017
- Expected End Date: 5/15/2018
- Expected Number of Beneficiaries: 400
- Describe how the project will benefit the community and/or improve the lives of the less fortunate: Negril Jamaica has no public health dental care available. While the dental clinic in Frome provides an option, it is an hour away and travel is difficult. The added equipment and supplies would allow dental care and dental health education to be provided in schools or other sites. It also would be available as back up to the stationary clinic during times when the main compressor or suction is down for repair, allowing the clinic to continue to serve patients. This clinic and offsite care is the only option to those living in Westmoreland parish.
- Estimated Total Project Volunteer Hours: 120
- Describe the Rotarian hands-on activities in the project (i.e. non-financial participation): A team of four Rotarians, and college students, if available, expect to work 4 days in schools, seeing an estimated 20 patients each day. In addition to providing direct patient care this grant will provide a mentoring opportunity from Rotarians to the dental hygiene students. Rotarians will support the students and/or provide direct assistance with set-up and take down of equipment, sterilization, administrative aspect of patient care and provide direct dental care. We will help with the patient education in the schools, which includes teaching students brushing techniques. This equipment will provide a continuing education opportunity for future dental hygiene students. Mentoring will also be provided to the staff dental hygienist so she can learn to set up mobile sites at other times.
- Describe the publicity plan to inform the general public that this is a Rotary sponsored project: Articles in the Lord Fairfax newsletter, online in our Facebook pages, both the Club and District, and newspaper articles. An article will be submitted to the District newsletter. Presentations by participants and students will be made at various Clubs and Lord Fairfax.
