  • Application Date: 5/24/2018
  • Club Name: Harrisonburg-Massanutten
  • Project Name: Giving Vets A Smile
  • Project Total Expenditures: $36,900.00
  • Grant Amount Requested: $1,500.00
  • Describe the Project, its location and its objectives: $3,000.00 ($1500.00 provided by District 7570 and $1500 provided by Harrisonburg-Massanutten) to cover a portion of the materials (labor is donated) in a joint venture to complete a $36,900 dental case for a disabled Navy veteran on a fixed income. The remaining $33,900 will be donated by the Harrisonburg Smilemakers practice and Rotarian Dr. Ian Bernard as in-kind work.
Gunners Mate Petty officer 2nd class Richard Baily served his country for 10 years. During that rigorous service, Richard received an anthrax vaccination, the full side effects of this vaccine are not completely understood and often called gulf war syndrome with highly varied symptoms reported. For Richard his trials have come with the state of his oral health... Harrisonburg SmileMakers will donate the labor to fully restore Richard’s oral health, treating all the decay and infection with root canals, crowns, fillings, periodontal therapies, implants and more.
This grant will be a singular grant; however in the future it could represent a great opportunity for Rotary and Rotarian Dr. Bernard to do every other or even every year to enrich the lives of members of our great community. Giving back to our community and our veterans aligns with the goals of Rotary International and Dr. Bernard’s personal calling to support fellow veterans. This project will allow an active Rotarian to share his vocation in a way that brings health outcomes to those less fortunate.
