• Rotary Year: 2019-2020
  • Application Date: 5/30/2019
  • Club Name (Primary): Greeneville
  • Club Name 2: Greeneville-Morning
  • Project Name: Greene County Isaiah 117 House
  • Project Total Cost: $8,000.00
  • Grant Amount Requested: $4,000.00
  • Describe the Project, its location and its objectives: When children are removed from their homes out of concern for their welfare, they are usually brought to the Dept. of Children's Services offices to await placement with a foster family. This wait can be several hours to a full day. These children often have nothing with them and are scared, lonely, hungry, and often in dirty clothing. Isaiah 117 House will be a comforting home where these children can be brought to wait - a place that is safe with friendly local volunteers who provide clean clothes, smiles, toys, and snuggly blankets. This space will allow children to receive the comfort and care they need while DCS staff are able to work on their behalf to find good foster placement. Greene County has consistently had more than 100 children committed to state custody over the last 5 years and these children need our help. We can make their experience better by building an Isaiah 117 House in Baileyton in northern Greene County for use by DCS. Rotary financial support will provide the siding and materials for the Isaiah 117 House and Rotarians will provide volunteer labor for the project.
  • Expected Start Date: 7/15/2019
  • Expected End Date: 1/1/2020
  • Expected Number of Beneficiaries: 100
  • Describe how the project will benefit the community and/or improve the lives of the less fortunate: Residents of Greene County heard of Isaiah 117 House from its founder, Ronda Paulson, who started a house in Carter County, TN. As a foster parent, she experienced first-hand meeting her new foster child in a DCS office, where her foster son was in dirty clothing that was too small and sitting on the floor of an office cubicle with nothing, no toys or books or entertainment. She resolved to provide a home with on-call volunteers, a fully stocked bathroom, girl's bedroom, and boy's bedroom. Such a home would help children in Greene County who are experiencing a traumatic transition. Last year, 103 Greene County children were taken into state custody and many of these children would benefit from Isaiah 117 House. In 2017, 138 children were remanded to state custody. In addition to positively affecting hundreds of children, the House would benefit DCS staff and allow them to do their jobs more efficiently and appropriately.
  • Expected Total Project Volunteer Hours: 100
  • Describe the Rotarian hands-on activities in the project (i.e. non-financial participation): Installing siding and materials purchased by Rotary for the project and also providing volunteer labor to hang doors, paint, install flooring, and other tasks as assigned by contractors who will be donating their services to the project.
  • Describe the publicity plan to inform the general public that this is a Rotary sponsored project: Rotarians will highlight their portion of the Isaiah 117 House by publishing articles in the Greeneville Sun (our local newspaper) and doing live on-air interviews with WGRV (our local radio station). Also, Rotary's involvement in the project will be recognized with a sign on the siding of the Isaiah 117 House. This project has already received excellent publicity and Rotary's involvement will be noted and recognized by thousands in our community.
