- Rotary Year: 2017-2018
- Application Date: 5/15/2017
- Club Name: The Blue Ridge
- Project Name: Green Hill Park--Youth Baseball/Softball Dugouts
- Project Total Expenditures: $18,243.00
- Grant Amount Requested: $4,000.00
- Describe the Project, its location and its objectives: Green Hill Park in western Roanoke County has a baseball/softball field that lacks dugouts. This field is used by the youth of the community for tee-ball, coach pitch softball, machine pitch baseball as well as Challenger Little League. Our hope is to work with both the Glenvar Youth Boosters organization, the arm of Roanoke County Parks and Recreation that oversees athletics in that part of Roanoke County, as well as Roanoke County itself to fund and execute this project. There are several objectives to this service project: 1. Introduce Blue Ridge: New Generations to the Rotary Foundation and Grant process. 2. Find a service project that can utilize the heart for service that New Generations possesses. 3. Increase community awareness of our New Generations club and work toward recruiting new members through this service project. 4. Work with Glenvar High School to increase community volunteerism and potentially establish an Interact Club at Glenvar High School. 5. Provide the youth of the community with a ball field that is both complete and they can be proud of.
- This is the Club’s: Primary Project Application
- Expected Start Date: 7/22/2017
- Expected End Date: 4/1/2018
- Expected Number of Beneficiaries: 1000
- Describe how the project will benefit the community and/or improve the lives of the less fortunate: Green Hill Park is in a part of Roanoke County where the majority of children participate in the free or reduced lunch program. While this doesn't really indicate the need, it is telling that the majority of families in the community do not have the resources necessary to buy their children lunches much less have the money necessary to allow their children to participate in organized sports. The Glenvar Youth Boosters provide a scholarship program to disadvantaged youth in the community so that all children have the ability to participate. It is our hope that by providing these dugouts, we can alleviate one of the capital improvements on the list for this park and, in turn, allow the Glenvar Youth Boosters to either lower their participation fee for all children in the community or make their scholarship program more robust.
- Estimated Total Project Volunteer Hours: 320
- Describe the Rotarian hands-on activities in the project (i.e. non-financial participation): Rotarians will be involved in a number of facets of this project including, but not limited to excavation of the area where the concrete pads for the dugouts will be located, constructing the forms for the concrete pads, pouring and finishing the concrete pads, installing the fence posts for the new dugouts, constructing the roof systems for the dugouts, installing the roof systems as well as finish grading and seeding the areas around the new dugouts.
- Describe the publicity plan to inform the general public that this is a Rotary sponsored project: Aside from New Generations own social media efforts using Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, it has been discussed that permanent signage at the ball field will be included in the project's completion. We cannot exclude coverage in the local newspaper as a byproduct of our effort, but our main focus will be on social media.
