  • Project Name: SLEEP IN HEAVENLY PEACE BED BUILD
  • Project Total Cost: $11,553.63
  • Grant Amount Requested: $11,500.00
  • Describe the Project, its location and its objectives: Sleep in Heavenly Peace is a charitable organization that finds beds for children who do not have beds and uses volunteers to build beds for these needy children. Chapters are located across the country and the Roanoke (VA) chapter serves the cities of Roanoke and Salem, and the counties of Roanoke and Franklin. The Roanoke Chapter started on December 20, 2019 and has so far conducted 4 Build Day events where they have built 81 beds. The beds are either single style or bed bunk style. The Rotary Club of Salem, in conjunction with Directors of the City of Salem, conducted one of these Build Day events and made over 20 beds. There are currently 51 applications pending for beds.
  • Expected Start Date: 10/15/2020
  • Expected End Date: 2/17/2021
  • Expected Number of Beneficiaries: 50
  • Describe how the project will benefit the community and/or improve the lives of the less fortunate: Unfortunately, there are thousands of kids throughout America who do not have a bed to themselves or a bed at all. Once identified, this need spread through social media across the country, prompting the development of chapters across the nation. No child should ever sleep on the floor nor have to share a bed with a sibling or guardian, yet it is happening every day. While the Covid pandemic temporarily shut down both the application and building process, SHP has restarted and the Roanoke Chapter received 51 applications in a very short period. These beds are built from scratch with strong wood products and are well engineered and built very strong and will last. The process builds the entire bed and the process continues with delivery and setup at the home by the building Rotarians. I expect 40 Rotarians will spend an average of 4 hours on this project.
  • Expected Total Project Volunteer Hours: 160
  • Describe the Rotarian hands-on activities in the project (i.e. non-financial participation): Rotarians will be the actual builders of these beds. The SHP Chapter provides a few experts to monitor the process, but Rotarians and their families will do everything from cutting and sanding the lumber, planing the lumber, drilling the holes in correct fashion, assembling the bed parts and then staining the lumber with a non-splintering, colorful stain. After drying and the SHP brand being burned into the headboard, the process will end for the day. Days later, the SHP Chapter will coordinate with both Rotary Clubs to deliver and assemble the beds, along with mattresses and bed linens. This build process takes 4-5 hours and is a great team-building event for Rotarians.
  • Describe the publicity plan to inform the general public that this is a Rotary sponsored project: Publicity will be coordinated with local TV stations for coverage. The first joint Salem Rotary and Salem Directors build was the subject of a story on local TV station WSLS. This build and the subsequent delivery process will be covered in social media on the club Facebook page and website. We will invite local TV stations to cover this build and deliver a story to the public of this great event and need. We will also provide a story and pictures to the Rotary Informer on this collaborative club effort as well as prepare a story for submission to The Rotarian in order to show clubs nationwide of this need and service opportunity for Rotary clubs.
