• Rotary Year: 2017-2018
  • Application Date: 5/31/2017
  • Club Name: Front Royal
  • Project Name: Miles of Smiles – Dental Prevention and Emergency Care for the disadvantaged
  • Project Total Expenditures: $8,000.00
  • Grant Amount Requested: $4,000.00
  • Describe the Project, its location and its objectives: The project will help students that have dental issues that their families cannot afford to pay for. It will be administered by the Warren County Public School System’s Director of Special Services Michael Hirsch (also a Rotary club member). It will take place on school property in most cases. Rotarians will deliver and distribute Dental kits and promotional information about the availability of dental care and it’s importance to their health. Visiting dentists will care for the children that have been prequalified for treatment ( by school nurses) in the mobile Doctors office. From time to time during the school year children will be sent to local partner Dentists( Who donate their time) for care that is needed immediately. The objectives are threefold. 1. To provide preventative care for poor children in our community. 2.) To provide emergency care for the children that are experiencing pain. 3.) To educate the children about proper dental hygiene and its importance to their overall health. The ultimate goal being children that can focus on their studies instead of the pain in their mouth.
  • This is the Club’s: Primary Project Application
  • Expected Start Date: 9/1/2017
  • Expected End Date: 5/7/2018
  • Expected Number of Beneficiaries: 1320
  • Describe how the project will benefit the community and/or improve the lives of the less fortunate: The less fortunate students whose families cannot afford dental care for their children will be offered preventive care as well as emergency care that will relieve them of their pain. Unhealthy mouths are a primary source of other causes of sickness. The ultimate goal being to educate the children about the importance of dental hygiene. We have approximately 5,000 students in our public school system. Over 50% of those students qualify for free or reduced lunches and 42% of students are on Medicaid. Dental care, unfortunately is not a priority! The need in our community is greater than any amount that this grant can fund, but will be a great advancement for dental awareness in our community! The current level of emergency service is between 5 – 10 students a year. We hope that by doubling that budget we can reach children before it becomes an emergency. We feel that we can do this by outreach, publicizing the programs availability as well as the visiting dentist programs importance to the children through dental kits that our club will distribute in the elementary schools.
  • Estimated Total Project Volunteer Hours: 109
  • Describe the Rotarian hands-on activities in the project (i.e. non-financial participation): Michael Hirsch is a member of our club and volunteers his time ( 25 hours ) with the Warren Coalition. He also works for the Warren County Public School system as Director of Special Services. He currently administers the program. Additionally, as part of the publicity for the program Rotarians will assemble the kits during a regular meeting( 59 hours ) and deliver the Dental Kits to our elementary schools ( 25 hours ) for distribution.
  • Describe the publicity plan to inform the general public that this is a Rotary sponsored project: We plan a press release for the 3 print newspapers in our community, Northern Virginia Daily, Warren Sentinel, Warren Report as well as the communities online paper Royal Examiner. We will also post on our website and Facebook. Finally, we plan on providing all Kindergarten – Second Grade (1,300 students ) a dental kit that includes a tooth brush with the Rotary Wheel on it and the Program name “Miles of Smiles”, “A Trip to the Dentist” coloring book, tooth paste, floss in a bag, along with information about the visiting dentist program and the Warren Coalition’s Emergency Care program. All items will carry the Rotary Logo.
