  • Describe the Project, its location and its objectives: Family Promise is an organization that supports homeless families in Johnson City, TN and surrounding areas. The agency recently purchased and moved to a new building located at 215 W. Watauga Ave. This site has no outdoor play space. Before moving to this new location the Operations Director expressed the importance of having space outdoors to play. The organization supports multiple families at a time with children ranging in age from infant to teenager. The families spend nights at host churches and days either enrolled in school or at the agency center receiving services, including childcare, case management and job search assistance. The building contains a computer lab, toys and other resources. One of the things missing is an outdoor play ground. The children in this program are going through a difficult time and a normal childhood is what they truly want. The goal of this playground is to bring a little more normalcy into their lives. The project will include repaving and padding the uneven part of the parking lot, putting up a chain link fence to ensure safety, and building a custom play structure to best utilize the space. The play structure will include a platform, tube slide, tire swing, baby swing and climbing wall. Benches will be provided for family members as well as a sail for shade. This project will promote family playtime, exercise, imagination and appreciation for the outdoors.

  • Describe how the project will benefit the community and/or improve the lives of the less fortunate: A major part of every childhood is playtime, especially outdoors. Outdoor play encourages exercise, discovery, creativity and proper physical development. Not only does outdoor play have individual benefits, but it also nurtures a sense of community among children. Right now the only outdoor space that Family Promise has available is a sidewalk and parking lot. Stability is hard to come by when a family is homeless. A playground allows outdoor play to be a constant for all the children who come through the Family Promise program. These children are part of family systems who are experiencing the extreme stress of homelessness. Johnson City has always made community service a priority, and one of the greatest services of all is giving children the opportunity to grow up with imagination through outdoor play, despite the vulnerable economic circumstances they find themselves in. A playground allows for this as well as a chance to relax, bond with family and socialize with other children. A playground is necessary to the support of Family Promise clients.
