  • Brief Description:
World Polio Day Event, Friday October 23, 2015-

This event was steered by a committee comprised of representatives of all Area 3 clubs, as well as a member from the Broadway/Timberville Club. The day began with a breakfast at 7:30am at the Spotswood Country Club that replaced the weekly meeting for both the Harrisonburg and Rockingham County Rotary Clubs and served a supplemental meeting for the other clubs. Each person who attended donated $5.00 as a part of their meal cost to Polio eradication. We had a Rotarian, Traci Blido, come to speak about her experience helping to give the Polio vaccine with a trip sponsored through her Rotary Club. She informed members with her experiences, pictures, and a challenge to help end Polio. Donations were taken both at the door, as well as throughout the meal at each table. END POLIO NOW buttons were purchased and were passed out to each attendee so that they could be worn throughout the day. That night, from 5:00pm - 9:00pm, area Rotarians once again came together at Brothers Craft Brewing, where a benefit named "Cask for a Cause" was held. The brewery brewed a unique cask of beer, mixed by the steering committee, and all proceeds from the cask ($250) went to Polio. Throughout the day and during the weeks leading up to October 23, the area raised more than $30,000 to donate to Rotary's END POLIO NOW initiative. It's also neat to note that the discussion for this event began during the District Conference in 2014!
