  • Brief Description:
Plan Competition is a competitive process that awarded over $33,000 cash, in business investment prizes for start-up and existing businesses looking to expand with additional job creation in Giles County and the towns of Pembroke, Pearisburg, Narrows, Rich Creek, and Glen Lyn.
The effort involved serving on the Leadership Team to develop the program, presenting during workshops to the small business participants, contributing financially to the prize packages, and attending and mentoring those business participants in our community. Jumpstart Giles saw an average of 30 new or expanding small business participants over the course of six weeks at workshops, mentoring and advising sessions, and Pitch Night held at Mountain Lake Lodge in July.
Club members were engaged in the entire process to support community and economic development in Giles. Two club members were participants in the competition. Multiple members served their professions and communities on the Leadership Team that orchestrated the marketing and implementation of the business development workshops. Additional club members served as mentors and advising those small businesses that participated. Even though COVID19 caused a delay in the Pitch Night Presentations and Celebration the event was held in July with club members present and supporting the program. The club, in addition to individual member engagement, contributed financially to support further small business growth in our community.
Our club members gave much of their time and expertise to the successful implementation of the Business Plan Competition and Jumpstart Giles Network. Through their guiding examples in the community, they were asked and gave of themselves to support others in their small business journey. The relationships built through this program speak to the standards set forth by Rotary and lived every day by club members. https://virginiasmtnplayground.com/jumpstart-giles/
