- Rotary Year: 2017-2018
- Application Date: 5/24/2017
- Club Name: Floyd County
- Project Name: FLOCK(Floyd Loving Our County Kids)
- Project Total Expenditures: $2,000.00
- Grant Amount Requested: $1,000.00
- Describe the Project, its location and its objectives: FLOCK is a local program established by concerned parents at Floyd County High School. The parents became aware that there were students whose only meal of the day is the one they get at school. The program provides supplemental food for any student who requests it(to avoid shaming). The school system consists of four elementary schools and one Centralized High School. There are 1,850 eligible students. The school nutritionist, Pamela Harris, who oversees the program, estimates that 30 to 50 students take advantage of the program on a daily basis. The parents conduct some fund raising as well, but Ms. Harris estimates this grant for a total of 2,000.00 dollars will fund the program for the entire school year. Rotary members will volunteer as lunchroom monitors and be hands on to serve the supplemental food. The school board has agreed to allow us to place a banner in the lunch room to promote our club. Our secondary goal is to see if we can create some enthusiasm for a Rotaract Club in the high school.
- This is the Club’s: Primary Project Application
- Expected Start Date: 8/10/2017
- Expected End Date: 5/7/2018
- Expected Number of Beneficiaries: 1850
- Describe how the project will benefit the community and/or improve the lives of the less fortunate: Hunger has been identified by county leaders as a significant problem in Floyd County. It is a beautiful place to live and people relocate here to take advantage of that. However, because of the local economy and small job pool, there is also a lot of poverty. This grant will be instrumental to ensure that fewer kids go to bed hungry. Statistics are clear that poorly nourished children do not perfo0rm as well academically as the well fed.
- Estimated Total Project Volunteer Hours: 200
- Describe the Rotarian hands-on activities in the project (i.e. non-financial participation): The estimated hours was derived by estimating one volunteer hour of lunchroom monitoring per day. The number of hours could be greater because the supplemental food can be served at any time of day upon request and we would certainly like to have volunteers available for that as well. Those details are to be worked out with the school board.
- Describe the publicity plan to inform the general public that this is a Rotary sponsored project: The publicity plan is to have an announcement purchased monthly for the length of the program in the Floyd Press. Also, we have recently gained a lot of traction with our Rotary Facebook page and will market heavily there with periodic updates. The school board has given permission for us to hang a club banner including the rotary wheel, in as many of the 5 lunchrooms as we want. Our secondary goal is to establish a good relationship with the School Board with hopes for a Rotaract Club in the future.
