- Describe the Project, its location and its objectives: The location will be at John C. Myers Elementary School in Broadway, VA. (However, it will be open to all Broadway area feeder schools, of which there are five). The project is a two week camp for children diagnosed with autism, and will provide an interactive, learning and fun event for rising kindergarten through rising 5th grade students. This is an inaugural event, and will be partnered with the Rockingham County School system to host the event. Unfortunately, the school system does not have any money budgeted to participate financially, but have pledged the use of facilities, and teacher volunteers. In addition to the volunteers, there will also be professionally trained staff that will be assisting with the camp.
Criteria for the Camp:
1. Primary autism diagnosis. 2. Student assessed with SOL's, and work primarily in Gen Ed. Curriculum. 3. Communicator (Verbal or Nonverbal). 4. Participator (Willing). 5. Can make physical needs known. - This is the Club’s: Primary Project Application

- Describe how the project will benefit the community and/or improve the lives of the less fortunate: The camp will provide a learning and fun environment for these students diagnosed with autism, and give them a sense of community and mainstream activities to help with their involvement in society and their respective schools. In addition, since this is the first of its kind in Rockingham County, it likely will be highly publicized, and spread awareness to other parts of the County.
Activities at the Camp Include:
1. Art therapy 2. Sensory Opportunities (Fine motor and gross motor) 3. Theater/Drama 4. Yoga 5. Building supplies/board games 6. Kung Fu 7. Cooking 8. Therapy dogs 9. STEM 10. Tech Day 11. Adaptive P.E. 12. Music Therapy 13. Pony Rides 14. Ice Cream truck
Field Trips Include:
1. Outdoor adventure rafting trip. 2. Visit to community pool. 3. Fishing at trout farm - Estimated Total Project Volunteer Hours: 300
- Describe the Rotarian hands-on activities in the project (i.e. non-financial participation): Rotarians will be actively involved in all facets of activities at the camp. The hands on activities will include planning (underway), set up, and participation in all activities during the course of the two week camp.
- Describe the publicity plan to inform the general public that this is a Rotary sponsored project: Organizers of the event presented at our Club in the spring of 2018, that brought this project to light. As it gets closer to the date, we plan to work closely with the school system and event organizers to organize a very coordinated publicity plan that will include PSA's, press releases, and general media notification. In addition, the school system is working internally to put the word out to all proposed attendees.
