  • Brief Description:
    1) Hope to Walk - Our club was honored to be part of a $50,000 Global Grant for the Hope to Walk organization. This organization provides low cost prosthetic legs to give the "gift of mobility' to amputees. Our Club had 2 presentations over a period of 2 years from the Hope to Walk organizers which included one of the recipients of a prosthetic leg. We were able to donate $8000 to the Hope to Walk program. Our club member Peter Weimerskirch has traveled with the team to Honduras twice to be part of the mission trips to assess need, measure, create and fit these prosthetic legs. We are so proud of Peter representing us on the ground with this amazing program.
    2) Youth Exchange Student - Our club is hosting Rocio Fernandez from Chile' this year as she participates in a Youth Exchange to Blacksburg High School. Rocio has been able to attend a few of our regular club meetings as well as our social events. We presented Rocio with a Paul Harris Fellow award in January 2020.
    3) Group Study Exchange - Our club hosted the GSE team from Taiwan in March 2019. We were able to share parts of the New River Valley with them along with sharing other Rotary Clubs within the NRV. As a special treat, our International Service chair and Chair for Hosting this GSE team, Michael Abraham, was able to travel to Taiwan in January 2020 to see these GSE team members 10 months later and be able to accept gracious hosting from our GSE friends in Taiwan.
  • Participation of Club Members:
    1) Hope to Walk - Our club has 100% participation in this project. We were able to learn about the program through the 2 club meeting presentations, which members were present for, and our club local donations went to fund the $8000 we were able to donate to the Hope to Walk Global Grant.
    2) Youth Exchange Student - Our club has 100% participation as we all share in the opportunity to meet Rocio during her club visits, her participation in the Blacksburg High School Interact Club, awarding Rocio the Paul Harris Fellow as well as the fundraising our club members participate in to provide for the monthly stipend and costs associated with hosting a Youth Exchange Student through our Club local foundation funds.
    3) Group Study Exchange - Our club has 100% participation as we were able to attend the meeting where the GSE team from Taiwan presented about their lives in Taiwan, as well as sharing the New River Valley during the week of their visit.
  • Resulting Benefits:
    1) Hope to Walk - This program has lasting and priceless benefits to the recipients of the prosthetic legs as well as the benefits to the families and friends of those recipients. We know that giving does the giver more benefit than the recipient in many cases, we know that Peter has been able to share in the giving as he is able to travel to Honduras to serve on the ground with the recipients of these prosthetics.
    2) Youth Exchange Student - Anytime we learn more about another culture and are able to put a friendly face with another country and place, we all become a little closer. The Youth Exchange program allows our as a US Rotary club the opportunity to share in the life of a high school student and learn more about their culture and country as well as having the opportunity for that student to learn more about Rotary, the US, and our little New River Valley culture. We hope that we are able to benefit for many years to come through our relationship and understanding gained through the Exchange program with Rocio.
    3) Group Study Exchange - Similar to the Youth Exchange program, we all can learn more about each other and make our worlds smaller by having the opportunity to meet people from other countries and cultures and sharing our own country and culture with them. Michael Abraham was also a beneficiary as he was able to travel to Taiwan to visit with our GSE friends!
