  • Club Name: Floyd County
  • Project Name: PLENTY/Floyd Rotart ADA Compliance Project
  • Project Total Expenditures: $2,500.00
  • Grant Amount Requested: $1,250.00
  • Describe the Project, its location and its objectives: Plenty!, a well established Floyd County Farm and Food Pantry (192 Elephant Curve Rd, Floyd, VA) serves local county individuals with any and all forms of food insecurity. Their vision is not only providing food, but healthy food, food and cooking education, volunteer opportunities and sustainable agriculture. Recent survey data shows PLENTY! serves approximately 10% of the county population. 459 families were served in 2017. Ever mindful of improvements, an independent assessment of the facility was done, (through Radford University) with a particular emphasis on individuals with disabilities which comprise a significant percentage of their patrons. Examples on improvements include Braille signage, slip proof rubber stripping of stairs, etc (see uploads). There is an educational component that includes placement of a television monitor, centrally located, to provide food and cooking information and schedules of events. These enhancements will improve their service to the community and broaden their ability for future grant procurement. Becoming ADA compliant will also allow PLENTY! to apply for grants they would otherwise be ineligible for.

Improvement in their food service delivery to all suffering with food insecurity. Provide education on healthy choices and nutrition, cooking techniques. Increased volunteer opportunities for disabled individuals, who turn from patrons to volunteers.

  • Describe the Rotarian hands-on activities in the project (i.e. non-financial participation): Many of the ADA equipment installations are within the skill set of the Floyd Rotary Club membership. For example, signage installation, TV monitor set up, non skid treads). Rotarians will perform this on a designated "work day". A second service day will be arranged to have the Rotarians in the actual kitchen preparing the food and then serving the Community Lunch. At this time a program about Rotary will be presented. Some of the labor(installation of ADA compliant sinks must be done by ADA certified contractors
  • Describe the publicity plan to inform the general public that this is a Rotary sponsored project: The Floyd Rotary Facebook page will create an event and will have an entry describing the ADA Project with PLENTY!. Local press, in our case, the Floyd Press will agree to two articles, with Rotary banners present. At the Community Lunch hosted by our club Rotary will be featured and given the opportunity to describe the present project and other past projects. The donated TV monitor will have a permanent sign ("Donated by the Floyd Rotary). An article is planned for the Rotary Informer, with the hopes of filling a requirement for the Gold Club Award which we seek to earn.
