• Rotary Year: 2016-2017
  • Application Date: 5/31/2016
  • Club Name (Primary): Harrisonburg
  • Club Name 2: Rockingham County
  • Project Name: Love Packs Program
  • Project Total Cost: $11,500.00
  • Grant Amount Requested: $4,500.00
  • Describe the Project, its location and its objectives: The Love Packs Program provides backpacks filled with food for the weekend to nearly 80 children from Spotswood Elementary (Harrisonburg City) and Peak View Elementary (Rockingham County) Schools as well as any siblings living in the home between the ages of 2-18. Including siblilngs, nearly 200 children received food through the Love Packs Program during the 2015-16 school year. The RISE United Methodist Faith Community has been partnering with the schools, Hope Distributed CDC food pantry and other churches and families since 2012, to feed children in the school community who are facing food insecurity.

Each week during the school year, volunteers fill backpacks with food on Thursday evenings. Items for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack are placed in a backpack for each child living in a home. Backpacks are delivered to the school on Friday morning and are discreetly distributed to the participating children to take home over the weekend. The children then return the empty backpacks on Monday morning.

Beginning in September, the backpacks will also support the literacy needs of the children by providing books in the backpack, four times per year. The new literacy component will help ensure the children have books to nourish their minds as well as food to nourish their bodies.
With the collaborative grant, the Rotary Clubs of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County will partner with RISE to provide funding for 50 children to receive Love Packs. Rotary members will also volunteer to fill backpacks on designated Thursday evenings and transport the backpacks to the schools.
  • Expected Start Date: 9/1/2016
  • Expected End Date: 3/15/2017
  • Expected Number of Beneficiaries: 50
  • Describe how the project will benefit the community and/or improve the lives of the less fortunate: The needs of families at both schools are well documented with 93% of children at Spotswood Elementary School and 33.5% of children at Peak View Elementary School receiving free or reduced meal assistance with breakfast and lunch throughout the school week. On the weekends when school meals are unavailable, these same children may not have enough food to nourish their bodies and minds. Research has shown that children who repeatedly come to school hungry demonstrate diminished academic achievement, poorer cognitive function and a decrease in school attendance. The Love Packs Program ensures that children in need will have healthy food over the weekend when school meals are not available.
  • Expected Total Project Volunteer Hours: 32
  • Describe the Rotarian hands-on activities in the project (i.e. non-financial participation): Members from the Rotary Clubs of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County will assist RISE volunteers in filling the backpacks on designated Thursday evenings and deliver the backpacks to the schools on Friday. Rotarians will contribute at least 32 volunteer hours to the Love Packs Program.
  • Describe the publicity plan to inform the general public that this is a Rotary sponsored project: A press release announcing the collaborative grant for the Love Packs Program will be sent to The Daily News Record and WHSV television. Mr. Peter Yates, Editor of The Daily News Record, is a member of the Rotary Club of Harrisonburg and always assigns a reporter to cover club projects. We anticipate getting TV coverage from our local WHSV station. The grant will also be featured on both club websites and in weekly newsletters.
The RISE United Methodist Faith Community will also publicize the grant in their weekly bulletin as well as monthly newsletter.
