Rotarians Feed the Hungry

t's the 107th anniversary for Rotary International, and Saturday Rotary Clubs from across the region are sent food overseas to feed the hungry in third world countries.

Matt Jackson, a student volunteer from Millbrook High School, said, "It was one of those things where I thought we were going to show up and maybe put cans of green beans people had donated in boxes and bags and send those out to local family or salvation army, but this is a much larger cause. I'm part of the Interact Club, and I haven't done a whole lot of the events, but we come out to the larger ones to help."

He joined more than a hundred volunteers who are packing up basic food needs for third world countries.

Cal Coolidge, the Area 1 Coordinator for Rotarians Against Hunger, added, "W are packaging 36,800 meals, and if my math is right, that's going to put us over 100,000 meals for the three years that we've done this project."

It's a service project that drew in Rotary members from across the northern valley.Volunteers say there's a lot that motivates them to donate their time.

Liz Jackson, President of Winchester's Latest Rotary, said, "If you ask any of them, their first answer is their ability to give back."

Workers, both young and old turned out to pack these bags and boxes which will be shipped out to families who need them most. For area students it's another good life lesson learned.

Chris Otoway, another student volunteer from Millbrook, added, "It actually feels really good. I was a little iffy at first, because I didn't know what it was going to be like, but I really enjoy it."

Matt Jackson concluded, "It's kind of nice to come out here. I didn't expect their to be such a large turnout. It's pretty impressive to see the familial spirit all these people get when they're working to help needy people."

Volunteers from Clarke, Frederick and Warren Counties were involved as well as people from Front Royal, Winchester, and Linden. It took about 3 hours for the the group to pack all the meals.
