• Rotary Year: 2016-2017
  • Application Date: 5/24/2016
  • Club Name (Primary): Waynesboro
  • Club Name 2: Waynesboro-East Augusta County
  • Project Name: Renovate and Reinvigorate the Boys & Girls Club
  • Project Total Cost: $12,000.00
  • Grant Amount Requested: $6,000.00
  • Describe the Project, its location and its objectives: Our project is to renovate and reinvigorate the Boys & Girls Club of Augusta/Waynesboro. Our objectives are to A) to convert space previously used for a rental business into a functional space to be utilized by teenagers and older school aged youth for fitness and recreation and B) beautify the exterior of the facility. Our local Boys & Girls Club mission is to enable all young people, especially those who need them most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, and responsible citizens. This renovated space will serve about one hundred youth though their after school and teen programs so this additional space is critical for their operations.

The teen entrance is on the side of the building but highly visible from Main Street. It has fallen into disrepair and is in desperate need of a ‘face-lift’.

We plan on doing a deep cleaning of the space including removal of trash and demolition of abandoned piping. Then we will paint the interior and exterior, replace the windows, enhance the lighting, waterproof the space, and some minor carpentry work to frame in a functioning hot water heater. After that is complete, we will install two types of flooring (one for weight training and cardio equipment already owned by the club) and another type of flooring more suitable for fitness classes and STEP training.
  • Expected Start Date: 7/1/2016
  • Expected End Date: 9/30/2016
  • Expected Number of Beneficiaries: 100
  • Describe how the project will benefit the community and/or improve the lives of the less fortunate: According to a recent study done by Augusta Health and Working on Wellness (a subcommittee of a hospital health forum), Waynesboro Public Schools area 3rd graders have a higher BMI (Body Mass Index) than state and national averages. The closest school (actually 500 yards away) to the club has 90% of its students receiving Free & Reduced Lunch. Basically – the kids in closest proximity to the Boys & Girls Club are getting poorer and fatter. This project will allow the club to better serve the youth that need it most with fitness and recreational programming. The club has equipment from a previous 21st Century Learning Grant (now expired) but doesn’t have the adequate, appropriate, and safe space to coordinate fitness and recreation programming. The club can not afford to renovate the space and the youth they serve can’t afford a more traditional fitness offering.

Our project would renovate a former business space located within the club (used as rental income) and renovate it to have fitness and recreation programming. The project is also highly visible from Main Street and we would have an immediate positive visual impact on the Club and it’s partnership with Rotary.
  • Expected Total Project Volunteer Hours: 200
  • Describe the Rotarian hands-on activities in the project (i.e. non-financial participation): Our Waynesboro Rotary Club will put in significant sweat equity. Volunteers from both Clubs will be involved trash removal, deep cleaning of the space, and painting. There will also be hours spent in working with outsourced vendors and timelines for sequencing of events and coordination of contracted services and volunteer activity.
  • Describe the publicity plan to inform the general public that this is a Rotary sponsored project: Our clubs will have a banner on location that is easily viewable from Main Street. We will update our websites with before and after pictures as well as use Facebook. TV3, News Virginian, and the Augusta Free Press will also have stories published.
