  • Project Total Expenditures: $6,000.00
  • Grant Amount Requested: $3,000.00
  • Describe the Project, its location and its objectives: Danville-Pittsylvania County Habitat for Humanity has recently obtained a home in the Dry Fork community of Pittsylvania County. The objective of the project is to assist with the rehabilitation of the home, so that it can be purchased by a partner family who is in need of decent, affordable housing. Through this project, After Hours Rotarians will provide volunteer hours to paint the interior of the house, recoat the basement walls, repair the carport ceiling, and assist in remodeling the bathroom. To help offset expenses related to these activities, After Hours Rotary will provide $3,000 from our club operations funds. We are requesting a matching grant of $3,000 from the District to further offset expenses of the project.
  • This is the Club’s: Primary Project Application
  • Expected Start Date: 9/1/2013
  • Expected End Date: 5/1/2014
  • Describe how the project will benefit the community and/or improve the lives of the less fortunate: As stated on the Danville-Pittsylvania County Habitat for Humanity website, “Adequate housing is a basic human need. Unfortunately too many people in our community do not have a decent place to call home.” Through this project, After Hours Rotary will provide significant volunteer hours and financial resources, so that our local Habitat for Humanity can make home ownership a reality for a family in need. Although this house will only be the home for one family, Habitat is an organization that has a proven track record of transforming communities, one house at a time.
  • Describe the Rotarian hands-on activities in the project (i.e. non-financial participation): After Hours Rotarians will provide volunteer hours to paint the interior of the house, recoat the basement walls, repair the carport ceiling, and assist in remodeling the bathroom. Work days will be scheduled and coordinated to allow all club members and their guests the opportunity to participate. Work days will be overseen by Randy Gentry, who is a Charter Member of our club as well as the Executive Director of Danville-Pittsylvania County Habitat for Humanity.
  • Describe the publicity plan to inform the general public that this is a Rotary sponsored project: Information about the project will be widely distributed to local media throughout the project lifespan. The information will highlight the partnership between Habitat for Humanity and Rotary, and focus on demonstration of Rotary's "Service Above Self" motto. Information will be distributed by the club via press releases to local media and via our website and Facebook page. The project budget also includes $1,000 for on advertising in local media, e.g. WAKG/WBTM, Piedmont Shopper, Danville Register & Bee, and the Chatham Star-Tribune, etc. Press releases, web-based media and advertising will include the Rotary Wheel image. Should we obtain overwhelming free media coverage through the press releases, then the funds allocated for advertising would be diverted to cover additional expenses for the home rehabilitation.
