  • Grant Amount Requested: $2,500.00
  • Describe the Project, its location and its objectives: Prescription for Reading is a new early literacy project of the Massanutten Regional Library. The project will partner area pediatricians and family clinics with the library to distribute book bags and books during well baby visits, beginning at six months. The bags will include literacy materials for parents that emphasize the importance of reading aloud to young children as well as a listing of literacy resources at the library and other community agencies.
  • Expected Start Date: 7/1/2015
  • Expected End Date: 3/31/2016
  • Expected Number of Beneficiaries: 1000
  • Describe how the project will benefit the community and/or improve the lives of the less fortunate: Harrisonburg and Rockingham County have an increasing population of young families with low levels of education and limited family income. The Prescription for Reading project will focus on providing books and resources to these young families to assist their children in early literacy skills. Research shows that reading aloud is the single most important thing you can do to help a child prepare for reading and learning. By putting books into the hands of babies and their families, we hope to promote early reading in all families in our region.
  • Expected Total Project Volunteer Hours: 44
  • Describe the Rotarian hands-on activities in the project (i.e. non-financial participation): The Rotarians will help assemble approximately 1,000 book bags. The bags will be stored at the Massanutten Regional Library for Rotarians to distribute to the participating pediatric offices, as needed, on a monthly basis.
  • Describe the publicity plan to inform the general public that this is a Rotary sponsored project: The following publicity will be generated: local newspaper article with pictures, WHSV (local television coverage), local radio stations (news coverage), Massanutten Regional Library (website and newsletters), participating Rotary websites and club newsletters, book bags inscribed with the names of each participating Rotary Club, and Valley Children's Clinic and Harrisonburg Community Health Center websites, newsletters, and project information listed on the community board in each clinic office.
