  • "WHILE WE MEASURE OUR CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE ROTARY FOUNDATION IN DOLLARS, WE MEASURE OUR WORK IN LIVES CHANGED AND SAVED."
    GEORGE KARNES

In June 1917, at the start of The Rotary Foundation, Arch Klumph stated, “It seems eminently proper that we should accept endowments for the purpose of doing good in the world." The Rotary Club of Kansas City, Missouri made the first donation of $26.50 and our Foundation was formed.

In 1947 after the death of Paul Harris, $1.3 million were donated to the Foundation when Harris' family asked for contributions instead of flowers. In 1957, the Paul Harris Fellow recognition was established for contributions to the Foundation of $1,000 or more. The Foundation has grown over time and, in 2017 for the 100th anniversary, the Foundation crossed $1 billion in value.

Here in District 7570 we are strong supporters of The Rotary Foundation. Our members have contributed millions of dollars over the years. This year, our district has set a goal of raising $1 million to support the Foundation. I hope you will join us in Blacksburg at the Skelton Center as we celebrate our achievements with Rotary International President Barry Rassin. Registration is open on the district calendar. While we measure our contributions to The Rotary Foundation in dollars, we measure our work in lives changed and saved. Here in our district, we are teaching children to read, building basketball courts, and feeding the hungry. Around the world, we are building schools, fostering peace, and eradicating polio. I am so grateful to be involved in this work with you, my fellow Rotarian. Thank you for “being the inspiration” and supporting OUR Foundation.
