• Rotary Year: 2013-2014
  • Application Date: 4/14/2013
  • Club Name: Frederick County
  • Project Name: 100 Year Celebration: Habitat for Humanity House
  • Project Total Expenditures: $6,355.00
  • Grant Amount Requested: $3,000.00
  • Describe the Project, its location and its objectives: In partnership with Habitat for Humanity and as part of the 100-year celebration of Area 1 Rotary, the Frederick County Rotary plans to build a Habitat For Humanity House in Frederick County. This project meets the Economic and Community Development Area of Focus.

The Frederick Country Rotary plans to raise $12,500 as its contribution to the Habitat House over the next two years. $5500 has been raised this year through a charity basketball game scheduled that occurred on March 22. An additional $3,000 will be raised next year through the online auction and peanut sales. The $3,000 match from the Community Project Grant will be used to purchase all the appliances necessary to outfit the house.

The Frederick County Rotary Club is fortunate to have Michael Butler, president of the Habitat for Humanity for the Winchester/Frederick Country area as a club member, so we are confident that we can both reach our contribution goal and be able to deliver a house to a needy family.

Not only will this project help to provide a needy family with a new home, it will also help to publicize the great work that Area 1 Rotaries have done over the last 100 years as well as provide our club with an outstanding project to build team work and morale.
  • This is the Club’s: Secondary Project Application
  • Expected Start Date: 7/1/2013
  • Expected End Date: 6/30/2014
  • Describe how the project will benefit the community and/or improve the lives of the less fortunate: Shelter is one of the most important needs anyone can have. By building a house for a needy family, you can really change lives of those less fortunate. This is not a band aid; this changes lives. Through our club’s financial generosity and sweat equity, we hope to provide a family a new start on life. Furthermore, because we are partnering with Habitat for Humanity, they provide all the mechanisms for this family “owning” the house. Not only does the family have to provide sweat equity, they also learn money management skills to pay off the low cost loan they are provided to own the house. This grant will enable our club to purchase the necessary appliances needed to make the house live able.
  • Describe the Rotarian hands-on activities in the project (i.e. non-financial participation): The Frederick County Rotary Club members will build the house with Habitat for Humanity members. Over the course of many months, both organizations will volunteer their time and the time of their families to construct the house.
  • Describe the publicity plan to inform the general public that this is a Rotary sponsored project: We will have our banner made to hang at the housing site. We will track our progress on our current blog and web site. We will try to get local newspaper and TV coverage as the event occurs using the celebration of 100 years of Rotary service for Area 1 as the vehicle for interest.
