• Rotary Year: 2013-2014
  • Application Date: 4/15/2013
  • Club Name: Lynchburg
  • Project Name: Lynchburg Daily Bread Renovation Project
  • Project Total Expenditures: $63,575.00
  • Grant Amount Requested: $3,000.00
  • Describe the Project, its location and its objectives: The Lynchburg Rotary Club has committed to raising $50,000 in support the Lynchburg Daily Bread's Renovation Project. Lynchburg Daily Bread serves hot, nutritious meals to Central Virginia’s homeless and hungry every single day of the year. The Lynchburg Daily Bread utilizes over 400 volunteers annually. Volunteers prepare and serve meals, greet guests and readily offer support and a listening ear to the many challenges and difficulties of life in poverty. Guests begin forming a line outside Lynchburg Daily Bread at 10:00 AM each morning for the first lunch table seating at 10:50 AM. This is particularly troubling during very cold and very hot temperatures, as well as rainy and windy days. The renovation will increase seating capacity by over 50% (from 35 to 53 seats at each table seating time), which will shorten the wait times. The renovations will also allow for a reserved table specifically designated for families with small children. A key component of the renovations is relocating a bathroom which is currently in the dining room, located only one foot away from a table that seats nine people. Of course, this situation is unpleasant for the diners and the guests using the restroom, but more importantly moving the bathroom will also make space available for one of the two new tables. Families now account for approximately 20% of the guests that Lynchburg Daily Bread serves each day, which is a noticeable increase over the past several years. It is extremely important for Lynchburg Daily Bread to help keep these families safe. When space is tight, a small child may have to sit next to a felon, including sex offenders. By adding more tables and chairs, Lynchburg Daily Bread will be able to keep one table reserved exclusively for families with small children.

  • Describe how the project will benefit the community and/or improve the lives of the less fortunate: Guests begin forming a line outside Lynchburg Daily Bread at 10:00 AM each morning for the first lunch table seating at 10:50 AM. • Describe the Rotarian hands-on activities in the project (i.e. non-financial participation): Rotarians will volunteer to help with demolition during the renovation process, and volunteer to paint the newly renovated dining room once renovation are complete. An estimated 15 - 20 Lynchburg Rotarians will participate in the demolition and painting, totaling more than an estimated 100 hours of volunteer time. Rotarians also regularly volunteer to help prepare and serve meals at Lynchburg Daily Bread, and this will continue after the Lynchburg Daily Bread Renovation Project is complete.
  • Describe the publicity plan to inform the general public that this is a Rotary sponsored project: The Lynchburg Rotary Club and Lynchburg Daily Bread will partner to promote the Lynchburg Rotary Club's involvement with the Renovation Project. The print and broadcast media will be invited to attend a ceremonial demolition event, where the Lynchburg Rotary Club President will "knock down" the first wall in the renovation process with a sledgehammer. Both organizations will promote the demolition event, renovation process and ribbon cutting on their respective websites, newsletter and Facebook pages. The media will be invited to all publicity opportunities, and press releases about the District Grant Award, completion of the $50,000 pledge, and Rotarians involvement in the renovation process will be issued at each opportunity.
