• Rotary Year: 2013-2014
  • Application Date: 4/15/2013
  • Club Name: Chatham
  • Project Name: Outdoor Space for Rainy Days at Oak Grove Lodge
  • Project Total Expenditures: $7,350.00
  • Grant Amount Requested: $3,000.00
  • Describe the Project, its location and its objectives: The Chatham Rotary Club seeks to repair 1) install new railings around the porch, 2) the roof of the front porch, 3) the woodwork on front of building, pillars, doors, and windows, 4) landscape around the front porch of Oak Grove Lodge. This location is an assisted living facility for low-income elderly and disabled people. It is located at 220 Oak Grove Lane, Chatham, Virginia. There are currently 41 residents at the facility. The front porch, in its present state, is unsafe. Recently, a resident fell from the porch as a result of the lack of railings. The roof on the porch leaks so the residents are unable to sit outside on rainy days. Additional repairs to the residence lodge include re-glazing to the front windows to protect the wood and increase energy efficiency.

Our objective is to give the residents of this small facility a safe location to enjoy the outdoors and fresh air even on rainy days and to improve the energy efficiency of the facility.
  • This is the Club’s: Primary Project Application
  • Expected Start Date: 7/15/2013
  • Expected End Date: 9/1/2013
  • Describe how the project will benefit the community and/or improve the lives of the less fortunate: In the case of this project, the lives of the less fortunate we would be improving are also residents of our community. By expanding their outdoor living space with a dry safe porch edged with attractive landscaping, the low-income residents of Oak Grove Lodge will have a place to sit outside when it rains. Not only can they benefit from the fresh air, but they can also benefit from socializing with other residents on the porch. This front porch is the main gathering place outside the facility. These residents are our family members, our neighbors and our friends. It’s important to our community to care for them.
  • Describe the Rotarian hands-on activities in the project (i.e. non-financial participation): The majority of the Chatham Rotary Club members will commit four hours of manual labor each to the project, for a total of 60 hours. This includes but is not limited to scraping, priming, painting and glazing of the windows and woodwork, installation of a hand-rail around the porch; and, planting low-maintenance greenery around the porch.
  • Describe the publicity plan to inform the general public that this is a Rotary sponsored project: The Chatham Rotary Club is fortunate to have one of three reporters on the staff of the Chatham/Pittsylvania County weekly paper in our membership. We are optimistic that we will be able to secure good print media coverage of the launch and completion of the project. We also have a member who runs a social media site called Tell Me What’s Going On – Southside VA. He has used this extensively to promote past projects and has committed to promoting this Rotary project as well. We will place a plaque on the front of the facility recognizing Rotary District 7570 funding support. At the completion of the project, we plan to host a ribbon cutting and ice cream social on the front porch and will encourage the media to attend.
