  • Describe the Project, its location and its objectives: Rotarians from the three clubs will obtain and store predetermined food, then meet at Albert Harris School (Martinsville's public elementary school) and prepare food packs for students of low income families who are unable to receive supplemental food from other sources for weekends. After the packs are prepared and stored, Rotarians will meet at the school before weekends to deliver the food packs to students over a period of about 22 weeks.

  • Describe how the project will benefit the community and/or improve the lives of the less fortunate: Approximately 70% of Martinsville public school students qualify for the free school breakfast and lunch program. However, many of those students are unable to receive proper and adequate nutrition during the weekends when they are not in school. The project will supplement other available food sources for these students so they can meet their nutritional needs and better face the challenges of school, while helping caregivers cope with the responsibility of their overall needs.
  • Expected Total Project Volunteer Hours: 75
  • Describe the Rotarian hands-on activities in the project (i.e. non-financial participation): Rotarians will obtain and store food (15 hours), then meet at the school and prepare and storefood packs (15 hours) , and then arrive at the school prior to each weekend for approximately 22 weeks to deliver the food packs directly to the students (45 hours).
  • Describe the publicity plan to inform the general public that this is a Rotary sponsored project: The clubs will contact the local newspaper, The Martinsville Bulletin, advising of the general project and the date the project will begin with the food pack preparation. The clubs will also post announcement and photos on social media sites such as Facebook pages. In addition, individual club members will post announcement and phots on their social media pages.
