  • Brief Description:
Rotary Club of Lexington Lunch teamed up with The Boxerwood Nature Center to redesign and refresh its popular Children’s Play Trail. Boxerwood, located in Rockbridge County, is a 15-acre, nonprofit nature center that provides colorful and stimulating living outdoor classrooms for school children in grades pre-K-12. Boxerwood provides environmental education to 2,500 students each year, helping local schools meet the Virginia Standards of Learning in life sciences. The Boxerwood Children’s Play Trail offers a one-acre imaginative, whimsical playground filled with non-traditional nature-based activities—chances to dig, build, draw, climb, run, crawl, splash, and make mud pies. The Lexington Rotary Lunch Club has assisted Boxerwood in a facelift for the Children’s Play Trail. Rotarians joined with Boxerwood staff and a crew of regular volunteers in building a pavilion-style roof over the “Mud Kitchen and Dirty Bistro” feature of the playground. This roof will provides shade for the youngsters and features rain barrels in which to harvest rain. The water collected in the rain barrels serve as the water source for those creative and pretend-delicious culinary mud creations. Rotarians additionally removed old wire fencing, trimmed bushes and trees, removed weeds, trimmed along the fence line and hauled off debris and performed general cleanup activities. Rotarians participated in the grand re-opening of the Play trail.
  • Participation of Club Members:
21 club members participated in the project during several outings held during the Fall of 2017, approximately 90% participation. An estimated 90 hours were devoted to the project.
  • Resulting Benefits:
Outdoor play is known to be a critical part of a child’s development and health. Rotary support of Boxerwood helps keep access to our facilities as low-cost as possible to ensure that families of all income levels can enjoy this community resource. Water savings from the installation of rain barrels is estimated to save Boxerwood hundreds of dollars by not relying on water from the City Public Works. The newly installed rain barrel collection system also features the Rotary Wheel as one of the gears to collect water and serves as wonderful reminder of our mission of service before self. The team helped installed new play features as well some colorful flower gardens with fun artwork, clear brush from existing play areas, and upgrade fencing. The Children’s Play Trail attracts 3,000 young children and their parents each year.
