  • Club Name 4: Washington County
  • Project Name: Coomes Center Inclusive Playground Project
  • Project Total Cost: $12,000.00
  • Grant Amount Requested: $6,000.00
  • Describe the Project, its location and its objectives: The Coomes Center Inclusive Playground Project is an extension of and complement to existing outdoor recreational facilities at the Coomes Center Recreational Center in Abingdon, Virginia. In 1995, the Rotary Club of Abingdon was the lead civic organization in the initial construction and financial support of this all-wood, outdoor playground. Twenty years ago, the Abingdon community joined Rotary in raising funds and providing on-site construction in a three-day effort to build this playground. It has successfully served area children and their families for several generations.

The Coomes Center Inclusive Playground proposed in this grant application will expand the existing playground by offering an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) fully compliant addition to the children’s playground. This impetus of this project comes from a community need for our children with special needs to have a playground they can utilize. The added playground will be engineered to accommodate a wide variety of special needs and abilities.

The new playground will not only meet but exceed the national standards for ADA compliant recreational facilities. This project will bring national recognition to the playground facility and to Rotary’s involvement in this innovative project. The play environment will provide physical and social interaction for all children and support play participation for all individuals with diverse abilities.

This collaborative grant will cover two specific items of playground equipment that are planned to be part of the completed project. These two specific items can be ordered, installed and put into use separately and independently from the rest of the playground. The two playground items are an Oval Swing set and a Rock-N-Wave set, both fully ADA compliant.
  • Expected Start Date: 7/1/2015
  • Expected End Date: 5/1/2016
  • Expected Number of Beneficiaries: 100
  • Describe how the project will benefit the community and/or improve the lives of the less fortunate: In its current configuration, the Coomes Center Playground serves as a destination playground for children and families from the local communities, as well and neighboring counties. At present, children with disabilities and special needs have to travel an hour or more to playgrounds in Tennessee and Virginia in order to enjoy an ADA compliant recreational facility. Once this inclusive playground is completed, the children of our community will have an exemplary playground on which to play here in Abingdon and Washington County and in surrounding towns, cities and counties.
  • Expected Total Project Volunteer Hours: 120
  • Describe the Rotarian hands-on activities in the project (i.e. non-financial participation): Rotarians from both clubs will provide hands-on support to the project in the following ways:
    • Working hand-in-hand with participating organizations for project completion
    • Making the community aware of the project via the project publicity plan
    • Fundraising activities, as requested by Coomes Center Recreation Center
    • Participating in assembly and construction activities as Rotary has done in the past
  • Describe the publicity plan to inform the general public that this is a Rotary sponsored project: The two partnering Rotary clubs will inform the public about this Rotary sponsored project in several ways including:
