  • Project Name: Exploring College at Blue Ridge Community College
  • Project Total Cost: $6,000.00
  • Grant Amount Requested: $3,000.00
  • Describe the Project, its location and its objectives: Exploring College is a program which Blue Ridge Community College (BRCC) will launch during the 2017-18 school year to introduce every eighth grade student in its service area to opportunities at BRCC during and after high school. It will bring eighth graders to the BRCC campus for a four-hour program. During the day at BRCC, the students will attend presentations on high school-BRCC dual enrollment, financial aid, college classes, and careers available to holders of certificates and associate degrees. Fund activities are planned as well. This project will support financially and with volunteer help the visits from the six middle schools in the Augusta County, Staunton, and Waynesboro school systems. Each middle school will have its dedicated day for the program. Rotary volunteers will help move the students from place to place during the day. Financial support will allow schools to transport the students to the event, provide them with materials in support of the program, and feed them on campus
  • Expected Start Date: 10/1/2017
  • Expected End Date: 5/7/2018
  • Expected Number of Beneficiaries: 1400
  • Describe how the project will benefit the community and/or improve the lives of the less fortunate: Middle school students are being required to create a program of study that guides them
through their high school experience. The difficulty is that many middle school students have not had the exposure to a college campus and to post-secondary educational opportunities. The Exploring College event is a chance for every eighth grade student in Augusta County, Staunton, and Waynesboro to visit Blue Ridge Community College and explore educational opportunities. The event will provide exposure to dual enrollment, financial aid, in-demand careers including health sciences and STEM. Students will also learn about college life and basic college terminology.
  • Expected Total Project Volunteer Hours: 200
  • Describe the Rotarian hands-on activities in the project (i.e. non-financial participation): Approximately six Rotarians will be available at each of the six days of a middle school visit to assist in moving the students to and from presentations and activities. At least one training session will be provided prior to the event.
  • Describe the publicity plan to inform the general public that this is a Rotary sponsored project: BRCC will recognize Rotary as a sponsor at presentations on those days when a middle school from the Augusta County, Staunton, or Waynesboro school system is participating. At least one item that the students take home will make reference to Rotary’s sponsorship. A press release will be prepared specifically for the Augusta County news media to announce the program and refer to Rotary as a sponsor. Rotary will also be mentioned in BRCC internal media
