• Rotary Year: 2013-2014
  • Application Date: 4/10/2013
  • Club Name: Kingsport-Sunrise
  • Project Name: Rotary Sunrise Carousel Park
  • Project Total Expenditures: $35,800.00
  • Grant Amount Requested: $3,000.00
  • Describe the Project, its location and its objectives: The Kingsport Rotary Sunrise Club is working to help build a playground (park benches, shelters, playground equipment) in a new revitalized area of Kingsport which will host the new Kingsport Carousel. The Carousel Project is a joint effort of volunteers and the City of Kingsport. This park project focuses on and is intended to be an important and dynamic part of the Carousel campus which will be a multi-function destination in a thriving area of downtown Kingsport.

This area, which less than 10 years ago was a 20-acre industrial book-binding manufacturer, now boasts a regional grocery store (Food City), the Kingsport Chamber of Commerce, the Kingsport Schools Central Office, multiple medical facilities, restaurants, higher education facilities along with a dynamic Farmers Market and other retail offerings.

This area is also our home meeting place for our Kingsport Rotary Sunrise inside the meeting room of the Food City. With this area being an important part of the downtown and a place where our Rotary calls home, it would be a natural fit and a dynamic opportunity to assist and to be an important partner in the revitalization.
  • This is the Club’s: Primary Project Application
  • Expected Start Date: 10/1/2013
  • Expected End Date: 5/1/2014
  • Describe how the project will benefit the community and/or improve the lives of the less fortunate: This project is designed to benefit the entire community. The park location is designed for families, corporate entities, church families and others to have picnics, family gatherings and birthday parties. Being located in an area which has undergone transformation, it is important to have community greenspace. The campus is located in a low-income HUD, qualified census tract, which has a large amount of poverty. Children and other patrons from the area will be allowed to use the playground free and have a place in the community for a physical exercise in a safe, warm and inviting area.

In addition patrons will be exposed to a showcase of community history through various rounding boards of the carousel. In addition to the history, park users will learn the history of the volunteer spirit which cast the vision and implemented this project.
  • Describe the Rotarian hands-on activities in the project (i.e. non-financial participation): Rotarians are already engaged in many aspects of this project. In addition to being carvers and working actively with the City of Kingsport, the Rotarians will build picnic shelters with tables and install playground equipment which will be used at the park. The Rotarians will also have various workdays to spread mulch on the area of the playground, build and install benches in the play area for parents to sit and wait while their children are playing on the playground. Rotarians will continue an active partnership with the City of Kingsport and community at-large which will strengthen the park’s vitality and success.

Each Rotarian of the club, 16, will spend an estimated 20 hours each on this project.
