  • Describe the Project, its location and its objectives: One Great Day of Sharing is a project of the Local Community Committee of the Harrisonburg Rotary Club. Its objective is to help stock the various food pantries in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County by encouraging food donations by shoppers at the various food stores in the community. Last year we collected 4000 lbs. of food at 6 locations. This year we seek to double the collections sites and amount of food.

  • Expected Start Date: 10/12/2013
  • Expected End Date: 10/12/2013
  • Describe how the project will benefit the community and/or improve the lives of the less fortunate: The demand on the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank has increased tremendously over the last few years. Through One Great Day of Sharing, the food collected will be distributed to the local food pantries in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County and alleviating some of the burden on the food bank. As a result, the food pantries will be better stocked in order to meet the needs of those in their communities.
  • Describe the Rotarian hands-on activities in the project (i.e. non-financial participation): The Food Drive is on one day for 6 hours. We have 10-12 grocery store locations, with 2 volunteers at each location performing 2 hour shifts. We also have 4 volunteers regularly picking up the food donations and delivering them to the distribution location.
  • Describe the publicity plan to inform the general public that this is a Rotary sponsored project: Using the funds provided by the club along with the matching grant, we plan to purchase vests with the Rotary symbol printed on them. These will be worn by the volunteers at the various collection sites, helping to identify One Great Day of Sharing with Rotary. Additional funds will be used to purchase signs and banners to be displayed at the collection sites as well as print, radio and television advertising.
