• Rotary Year: 2013-2014
  • Application Date: 4/12/2013
  • Club Name: Harrisonburg
  • Project Name: Love Packs
  • Project Total Expenditures: $1,200.00
  • Grant Amount Requested: $600.00
  • Describe the Project, its location and its objectives: The RISE Love Pack Program provides a backpack of nutritious foods each weekend for children who live at or below poverty level and attend Spotswood Elementary School. Sponsoring a Love Pack is only $200 per child and it will give them a backpack of food for every weekend for the school year. Harrisonburg Rotary wants to provide funding to help 6 students, and will also provide volunteers to assemble the backpacks once a month.
  • This is the Club’s: Secondary Project Application
  • Expected Start Date: 8/26/2013
  • Expected End Date: 5/15/2014
  • Describe how the project will benefit the community and/or improve the lives of the less fortunate: Hunger is a serious problem for students in this school, with 91% of the student body eligible for the free or reduced lunch program. This means that over 400 children in this school alone live with food insecurity at home. Teachers and administrators know that this impacts their ability to concentrate and learn when they come to school. RISE currently provides Love Packs to 25 children and their goal is to increase the number of children served to 35.
  • Describe the Rotarian hands-on activities in the project (i.e. non-financial participation): Rotary provides 3-4 volunteers once a month to assemble the backpacks with food for the month.
  • Describe the publicity plan to inform the general public that this is a Rotary sponsored project: Rotary will ask RISE to put our logo on their website on the “Love Pack” page, saying RISE is proud to partner with the Rotary Club of Harrisonburg to sponsor six of children in this program. We will also pursue a media blitz when we get the grant and create a photo op when we deliver food to RISE or gather to put together the backpacks.
