  • Brief Description:
The Club’s vocational service efforts are primarily handled by our ten member Vocational Service Committee. This committee conducts projects that are intended to illustrate and enhance the importance of vocational service to the community and to Club members.

One of our Club’s most important activities, and an annual highlight, is our selection of the “Rotary Club of Blacksburg Citizen of the Year”. The nominating and selection criteria for this award are centered on a person’s ethical business behavior and service to the community. Plus, we value nominations that represent the many worthwhile careers and vocations found throughout our community. Our 2013 Citizen of the Year award represents our twenty-second recipient, this award having originated in 1990. The occupations of past recipients is varied and includes: high school principal, barber, doctor, newspaper editor, fire chief, college president, public utility foreman, coach, Realtor, policeman, and on and on. Despite the diverse careers represented, a common thread among these Citizens of the Year is their community involvement and Service to others. Student recipients are selected based on excellence in their chosen vocational studies, and has shown proper ethics/ moral character/ and good citizenship.

Another important club activity that recognizes vocational service is our Outstanding Vocational Student Awards. These awards are presented annually to four to six high school seniors and includes a $750 scholarship to attend a community college or vocational school, to assist in the pursuit of their chosen vocational career. this year we awarded 5.

In addition to these significant efforts, the Club also supports and partners with the county schools “Winning Choices” character education program. In addition to financial contributions, Club members are involved in school assemblies with local college athletes and ROTC students to discuss the importance of making proper decisions, and building character. Plus we also contributed to the judging of the Winning Choices essay contest.

We features a “Membership Moment” at weekly Club meetings where a selected member is described to the Club, outlining among things, their career and job path.
