  • Application Date: 4/12/2013
  • Club Name: Front Royal
  • Project Name: Costa Rica School Furniture Project
  • Project Total Expenditures: $7,235.00
  • Grant Amount Requested: $3,000.00
  • Describe the Project, its location and its objectives: Sister Rotary clubs from different countries will partner to deliver surplus school furniture valued at approximately $90,000 to a school in an impoverished community on the outskirts of San Jose, Costa Rica.

Three 40 ft. shipping containers will be delivered to the 15th Street School, Front Royal, Virginia, by Skyline Express Trucking. Rotarians and other volunteers will disassemble student desks and other items for efficient packing and then transfer them into containers. Once filled and secured, containers will be transferred to Virginia Inland Port, then by rail to Norfolk International Terminal where they will be loaded onto a CVI ship bound for Puerto Limon, Costa Rica. Rotary Club of San Pedro-Curridabat will claim shipment at the dock and truck the shipment to a warehouse in San Pedro. The Rotary Club of San Pedro will facilitate assembly and delivery to the school in Costa Rica.

Last year the Ministry of Education of Costa Rica assigned some funds to remodel the facilities of the Technical and Professional High School "Lyceum Uladislao Gamez," a school in the very depressed community of Tirrases. In six years, the high school has grown from 65 students to 780 today. This creates a great need for academic facilities for the teenagers and to help protect them from drugs. The items we are sending are very needed, as they are currently using very deteriorated old furniture. The remaining desks will be delivered to the many other needy colleges (high schools) nearby.
