  • Project Name: Equipment, supplies and mulch for Child Care Center
  • Project Total Expenditures: $5,510.00
  • Grant Amount Requested: $2,755.00
  • Describe the Project, its location and its objectives: Valley Interfaith Child Care Center, located in Blacksburg, VA, has a goal of creating high-quality, affordable, educational, and nurturing care for children (ages 0 -5) of income-eligible working families in the New River Valley. The organization serves as a support system for economically disadvantaged citizens with children who wish to work but cannot do so because of the high cost of child care. Over the past year, enrollment has nearly doubled (now serving 43 children) at the center while funding sources are shrinking. Higher enrollment requires more desks, supplies, equipment and overall resources. Our club will purchase new desks and chairs and a reading center to meet the increased enrollment, art supplies, several play stations, sand and mulch for the playground to be spread spring and fall by club members. • This is the Club’s: Primary Project Application
  • Expected Start Date: 7/1/2013
  • Expected End Date: 5/15/2014
  • Describe how the project will benefit the community and/or improve the lives of the less fortunate: VICCC serves a population of lower income clients that are able to work because they have affordable child care. This program empowers individuals that might otherwise be unable to work. Parents that maintain employment and have access to quality child care become contributing members of the community and are able to provide for their families in lieu of being on public assistance. Safe, dependable child care helps this at-risk population. Tables and chairs and other seating are needed to adequately equip the classrooms and care givers can enrich the children when they have supplies for curriculum, safe and fun play equipment and seasonal mulch/sand.
  • Describe the Rotarian hands-on activities in the project (i.e. non-financial participation): Blacksburg Rotarians will work hand in hand with VICCC staff members to purchase items and then after delivered, assemble items on site. Approximately 20 Rotarians will work to purchase and assemble furniture. Club members will also arrange for the spring and autumn spreading of mulch on the playground and will replenish sand in the sandboxes in the spring. We hope to work cooperatively with some Interactors and Rotaractors from the Blacksburg clubs.
  • Describe the publicity plan to inform the general public that this is a Rotary sponsored project: Our Public Relations Committee will write articles for local newspapers, contact the media and also submit letters to the district newsletter. Social media will also be used and we will post and share information about the child care center and our work there. Pictures of our Rotarians, child care center employees and volunteers working at the site will be used on our website, facebook page and in our weekly bulletin. Members will wear their Rotary-emblem clothing or Rotarian at Work t-shirts.
