• Rotary Year: 2017-2018
  • Application Date: 5/30/2017
  • Club Name (Primary): Danville-Riverview
  • Club Name 2: Chatham
  • Club Name 3: Danville-After Hours
  • Project Name: Dan River Region Beautification Project
  • Project Total Cost: $18,000.00
  • Grant Amount Requested: $9,000.00
  • Describe the Project, its location and its objectives: Approximately five years ago, the City of Danville conducted a housing study and found that 2,000 homes were abandoned or unfit for occupants. With a budget of more than six million dollars, hundreds of homes have been demolished. The City also has contributed to beautification projects for all neighborhoods, most notably through the annual Make Danville Shine event.

In the Town of Gretna, Elba Park sits neglected while so many residents want more for this special location. Not only does Elba Park serve the 1300 residents of Gretna, but also many in the surrounding county as there is not another park for at least 10 miles. In particular, the existing playground equipment is minimal and what is there is in disrepair.

The Dan River Region Beautification Project aims to physically improve a number of underserved locations in the City of Danville and the Town of Gretna. With the help of the City, Rotarians will identify several blocks in need of landscaping, gardens, painting, litter pickup, and other improvements, to be determined by the residents on those blocks. Further, Rotarians will work with community champions in the Town of Gretna to make improvements to Elba Park, primarily installing playground equipment and safe ground cover in the surrounding area.

This project would bring Rotarians, residents and higher education students all working together over the course of two major volunteer events in the region, Averett University’s Week to Engage (September 2017) and Day to Engage (March 2018). The Center for Community Engagement and Career Competitiveness (CCECC) at Averett organizes several days of service each year, where students, faculty and staff from the University take on a variety of projects throughout the region.

Both the CCECC and our Rotary clubs agree that a partnership could result in exciting results for the region. This partnership, however, is not a new one. Riverview Rotary and the CCECC partnered on the MLK Day of Service for the region in 2015, with the support of a District Grant. Like that event, these would be followed by a Sunday Supper, when the Rotarians, Averett volunteers, and neighborhood residents would share a meal and a conversation once the projects are complete.

This project would meet a number of objectives, including: contributing to the eradication of blight; improving the community spirit in neighborhoods due to neglect; empowering residents to take ownership of their neighborhoods; and relationship building among Rotary, the CCECC, and our neighbors.
  • Expected Start Date: 9/11/2017
  • Expected End Date: 3/30/2018
  • Expected Number of Beneficiaries: 400
  • Describe how the project will benefit the community and/or improve the lives of the less fortunate: As Rotarians, we believe that everyone in our community deserves a beautiful neighborhood and access to healthy community spaces, regardless of income. To that end, this project would provide physical improvements to several blocks in the City, as well as a beloved park in the Town of Gretna.

Localities are operating on extremely tight budgets, and often there are not funds available to complete all necessary projects in a particular area. With the City of Danville’s focus on the River District, there are neighborhoods that feel neglected, and this is where Rotary can help. The same goes for Elba Park; the Town alone does not have the funds necessary to improve and maintain the park, and this project could make some critical improvements so that residents, especially children, could enjoy all of the amenities.

It is very difficult to estimate the number of beneficiaries, since not only will the residents living on the identified blocks in Danville benefit from the beautification projects, but so will other city residents who spend time on these blocks. Further, it would be difficult to estimate the number of users at Elba Park, and how this might increase should the improvements to the park be made. That said, we are confident that hundreds of our friends and neighbors would benefit from the broad scope of this project.
  • Expected Total Project Volunteer Hours: 800
  • Describe the Rotarian hands-on activities in the project (i.e. non-financial participation): Rotarians will provide landscaping, painting, cleaning, playground improvements, fellowship and more to residents in the City of Danville and the Town of Gretna.

After the beautification projects are complete, Rotarians will get together with their project partners for a Sunday Supper, to share a meal and a conversation about the work completed and how they can continue to improve their communities.
  • Describe the publicity plan to inform the general public that this is a Rotary sponsored project: We will publicize the project and inform the public of Rotary’s contribution through the Danville Register & Bee, Showcase and Evince magazines, local radio and television, and Averett University/CCECC/Rotary Facebook pages and websites, and social media in general. Volunteers also will wear project t-shirts, which will have Rotary's logo and the club names on the shirts.
