  • Describe the Project, its location and its objectives: The project is to provide a heating pump for the Union Mission. • Expected Start Date: 7/1/2013
  • Expected End Date: 12/1/2013
  • Describe how the project will benefit the community and/or improve the lives of the less fortunate: The Union Mission offers food and shelter 24/7, to the poor people of Southern Virginia, every day they feed hundreds of people, and assist people during natural disasters like flooding or fire, or in very cold days, by providing food and shelter, especially if people do not have heat at their homes.
It has helped the community for more than 75 years.
The Schott Foundation in Bluefield, has just helped renovating the mission so they have more room inside for the people who are being served, and they need now the heating pump.
  • Describe the Rotarian hands-on activities in the project (i.e. non-financial participation): Our Bluefield Rotary club has helped the Union Mission since 2001 when our club was chartered. We have cooked and served meals once a month for the last 12 years. Our members are down there helping with the cooking, the packing and serving the meals to the less fortunate people who are waiting outside for their meals. See attached pictures.
  • Describe the publicity plan to inform the general public that this is a Rotary sponsored project: Our club is planning to launch a campaign in the radio, and newspaper concerning the project. We are going to send pictures to be published, write articles and invite the local WVVA TV station to the event.
Our members wear the aprons with the Rotary emblem on them, so everyone knows Rotarians are the one serving.
We get also our Interact club to help us and volunteer with us.
  • Cooperating Organizations – Please list each cooperating organization, if any: The Union Mission is helped by a lot of local NGO and local churches and businesses, but none for this specific project.
