  • Brief Description:
The Rotary Club of Blacksburg's PR goals include keeping the members informed and providing prospective members a place to find out about us. The Club utilizes a minimum to no cost strategy with our PR. Our PR committee publishes a weekly bulletin, places timely news and event updates on our website and Facebook page and prepares press releases of Club activities. Our Facebook and website is the place to go to find Club information and event pictures with the occasional focus of a special project or event, such as our Chocolate Festival, on our website's landing page. We do also utilize a Twitter account for posting Club information.

We have extended our Public Image in these ways:
    • Hosting a member that executes the position of Rotary District Newsletter Editor, who on a monthly basis reaches out to all District Leadership, and who targets clubs and members for Spotlight features in the District Newsletter
    • This same editor volunteers to coordinate all the photo opportunities at the District Conference and create a special edition of the District Newsletter to celebrate the District Conference
    • This same editor posts to the District Facebook page to bring items of interest to members in our District
    • We host a monthly column with a local newspaper to bring all our latest news to our community (The News Messenger)
  • Participation of Club Members:
Our club members rely on the regular communication tools – especially the website and bulletin for what is going on and Facebook for pictures from our events and our weekly meeting. The scope is to include all the committee chairs and directors in developing the content that represents the Rotary Club of Blacksburg and to reach all the members at the club as well as the public who can learn what we are all about. By using multiple media formats, from print and newspaper to electronic, we aim to cover a wide age range and geography. We also encourage our members to wear Rotary shirts and pins to events in an effort to promote our Club and Rotary.
  • Resulting Benefits:
The results of having information on our club and its outreach consistently in the public eye has aided in the growth of our membership and interest in our Club. This year we have added 5 new members since the springtime. Strong communication also helps to build our club internally. In the weekly bulletins, a mix of local and Rotary International news and upcoming events is provided. We also provide attachments of District newsletters to all members when District news is published. Our website and Facebook page allow us to get information out fast.

Additionally, publishing information on our awards and scholarship programs provides for top notch applications and nominations. The publicity has helped to educate our local youth on what Rotary is as a service organization and we hope it will plant a seed in their minds to seek out our organization for future membership. Our youth awards and scholarship programs have allowed our Club to develop a strong relationship with the public school system and administrators.
