February is Peace & Conflict Prevention / Resolution month

February is Peace & Conflict Prevention / Resolution month, and this theme is also one of Rotary’s 7 Areas of Focus. As a humanitarian organization, peace and understanding are cornerstones of our mission. It is through our programs and service projects that we move toward these goals. We must continue to support global humanitarian grants, peace education programs, scholarships, group study exchanges,  youth exchanges, and other programs that bring us together and provide opportunities for learning, sharing, and building positive relationships. This is how we accomplish Rotary’s Vision: "Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change — across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves."

But as I write this letter, I am drawn to one particular word in the Vision Statement -- “ourselves.” As I reflect on peace and understanding, my heart is heavy when I think about the anger, violence, divisiveness, and dissension that surrounds us these days. Peace and understanding can only come when we respect, care for, and treat others as we want others to do in return. It is what we do as individuals that plants the seeds of peace and understanding.

Recently, the Clubs of Area 1 created and published a collective statement that, to me, says it all:

Please know that I think of you all every day and pray that you, your families and friends remain safe and healthy during these challenging times.

Yours in Rotary Service,

DG Nancy
