Polio

Thirty-three years ago, 1000 children a day were being diagnosed with Polio. Earlier this month, I received an email from Rotary International President Barry Rassin where he said;

“Today, the world is a very different place. Thanks to the vision of Rotary’s leaders then, and the commitment of the generations of Rotarians who have followed, we now have fewer cases of polio than at any time in history. As I write this message, only 14 children have been paralyzed by the wild poliovirus in all of 2018. Only three countries are still polio-endemic; wild virus still circulates in only one remaining reservoir, on the border of Afghanistan and Pakistan.”

We have eradicated 99.9% of all polio wild virus cases. Seventeen million children have been saved from this crippling disease by the work done by Rotary, our partners and the Rotarians of District 7570. This year, we have already given over $50,000 to PolioPlus. On October 24th we will again mark World Polio Day. We have recognized this day by have World’s Greatest Meals, Pints of beer, ice cream and jelly. As we draw closer to eradicating only the second disease in human history, the work is incredibly difficult and expensive, but we must keep our promise to the children of the world. So, this month, as you focus on your personal and club giving, please help us finish this job. Plan an event for your club, have a speaker on polio or support a National Immunization Day. Thank you for your focus on Rotary’s number one goal.
