Economic and Community Development

 District 7570 Rotarians,

As always, I hope you are staying safe and healthy. It continues to be important to take precautions, especially clubs that have returned to meeting inperson. Masks and physical distancing are strongly recommended and show respect for others. Please think of the 4-way Test: Is it fair to all concerned?

The theme for October has been changed from Vocational Service to Economic and Community Development, which is one of the 7 Areas of Focus. The work of Rotary begins in the community, and every community has its own unique needs and concerns.

As Rotarians, we need to invest in people by creating sustainable, measurable, and long term economic improvements in their communities and livelihoods. Global Grant opportunities, funded by The Rotary Foundation and supported by your District, include:

o Expanding the abilities of local entrepreneurs, community leaders, local organizations, and community networks to support economic development in impoverished communities.
o Developing opportunities for productive work.
  o Expanding vocational training opportunities.
o Sending a vocational training team (VTT) to teach business leaders in developing communities about business planning and financial accounting.
o Reducing poverty in under-served communities.
o Supporting studies for career-minded professionals related to economic and community development.
o Supporting microlending to provide funding for local businesses to increase employment opportunities in the community. 190 million people fund their business endeavors through microfinance.

Did you know that 1.4 billion people, nearly half of them employed, live on less than $1.25 a day? If we can make a difference in the life of one person in an underdeveloped community, then we have created an opportunity to improve and empower an entire community.

I have enjoyed my Virtual DG Area Visits in August and September. I love seeing you via Zoom and hearing what’s on your minds. Thank you for spending time with me.

Don't forget that Saturday, October 24 is World Polio Day. During the month of October, plan a communitywide fundraiser that will raise funds and attract new members. Enhance your club’s Public Image and increase awareness of what your club and Rotary have done in the fight to eradicate polio.

Thank you for all that you do as Rotarians in local and global communities. You are making a difference, improving lives, and “doing good in the world.

Yours in Rotary Service,

DG Nancy
